Holiday Gift Ideas For Dog Lovers 2020

Written by J.B. Shepard, professional pet photographer and founder of the Puptrait Studio.

Odds are the dog is already everybody’s favorite family member. But we all have that dog lover in our lives that takes their passion for pets to a whole new level. Which is why our dog blog team has put together a Holiday gift guide just for dog lovers.

These Holiday gift ideas are perfect for any dog lover — regardless of whether you are commemorating Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, the Winter Solstice, or celebrating Festivus with the rest of us — and are tiered at a number of different price points, including a few luxury dog inspired gifts and even FREE / DIY gift ideas for those dog lovers on the tightest of budgets.

We’ve compiled a list of our favorite gifts for dog lovers – any of which would make a great for any crazy dog person (even, if you are the crazy dog person).

Holiday Gift Ideas Sorted by Price Point:

FREE / DIY Dog Lover Gift Ideas

When it comes to gifts, it’s the thought that counts. This sentiment is especially true if you’re a starving artist (like us), a college student, or just anyone else who finds themselves dead broke in the second week of the month.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

Dogs love treats. So, if you’re giving a gift to a dog lover, they will naturally love this affordable but thoughtful gift idea. Dog biscuits are surprisingly easy to make. Even if you would never trust your cooking skills enough to feed another human, odds are their dog will still love whatever you manage to bake – even if they are a tad bit burnt.

Feel free to borrow our homemade dog biscuit recipe. The recipe is easy to follow and uses common ingredients most folks already have in their kitchen cupboard. If you’re missing an ingredient or two, we’ve included links to where you can find them on Amazon. You’re welcome!

Coupons for Puppy-Sitting

Sometimes it really is the thought that counts. Most dog lovers plan vacations around their dogs, simply because they can’t stand the idea of putting their dog up in a kennel for any extended period of time or leaving their pup with anyone they don’t trust. By printing or handwriting a small coupon book offering your own services as a puppy sitter, you’re acknowledging that your favorite dog lover puts their pup first and freeing them to take that dream vacation that they’ve been putting off for years.

Volunteer With or Donate to a Rescue in Their Name

It’s an unfortunate reality but many shelters and dog rescues are over crowded, understaffed and underfunded. By donating your time or a few dollars to a rescue in the name of your favorite dog lover you’re recognizing their passion for pets and nurturing nature, as well as helping care for unhomed pets that are still looking for their fur-ever family.

Sometimes, it really is the thought that counts

This is an especially great gift for any dog lover that recently lost one of their favorite fur babies. Even if their dog can no longer be with us anymore, they’ll smile knowing that your thoughtful gift helped save the life of another pup. If you can figure out where the dog lover you’re donating on behalf of rescued their dog, we recommend donating there. But there are a number of other great dog rescues and shelters that could use your support, including smaller volunteer operated nonprofits such as Bella’s Bully Buddies, or larger rescues and shelters like the SPCA or BARCS.

Antler chews are a cruelty-free alternative to animal bones and rawhide chews.

All Natural Deer Antler Chews

Deer antlers are an excellent natural alternative to bones — especially for heavy chewers. Antlers contain many of the same benefits of bones, as they’re great for cleaning dental plaque and loaded with minerals. But they’re far less likely than bones to shard, meaning they’re less likely to result in a bowel obstruction or require a complicated / expensive surgery.

It’s also worth mentioning that antler sheds are cruelty free and technically meet Vegan standards. Where a bone has to be removed from the inside of an animal, deer naturally shed antlers following rutting season. Meaning, these chew toys are essentially repurposed deer garbage.

The antlers linked here are roughly 6-7 inches in length and range from 1-2 inches thick. Like most antlers that you’ll find at retailers, these chews have been scrubbed and sanitized — so they should be free of any lingering smells or parasites. A one pound package of these antlers (~2-3 large antler pieces) will set you back a little less than $37.

How to Find Deer Antler Sheds for FREE

If you live in an area with a relatively high deer population and don’t mind a bit of hiking, you may have luck finding free and cruelty free guaranteed deer antler sheds in the woods. Typically you’ll find these antlers near the base of larger deciduous trees, as bucks will scratch tree trunks when it comes time to shed.

When deer shed their antlers depends on a number of factors, but if you live in Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Delaware deer tend to drop their antlers anywhere from December to March. Which makes this one of the easier times of the year to search for antler sheds, as they are less likely to be hidden by fallen leaf and foliage cover. Still, poking around fallen leaves with a stick or bringing a dog along to sniff around the base of trees can be tremendously helpful.

Be Careful Entering the Woods During Hunting Season!

Depending on the regulations in your area it might be deer hunting season as you approach the Holidays. Black Powder, Firearm (i.e. Handgun), Archery, and Junior Hunting seasons can run fairly late into the year. Please be mindful of hunters and always wear bright and high visible clothing when hiking in the woods during the Fall and Winter months.

Dog Lover Gift Ideas Under $5

Looking for some great dog themed bargain stocking stuffers or low budget items for your office gift swap? Say no more, pet fam — we’ve got you covered!

Dog Ate My Mad Libs

Dog Ate My Mad Libs is a 48 page paperback collection that includes 21 original fill-in the blank mad lib stories. Fun for all ages, this is an especially great educational gift for those younger dog lovers that are still learning the nuances of grammar. You can order Dog Ate My Mad Libs for $3.99 with FREE Prime shipping and returns.

Wilson US Open Extra Duty Tennis Balls

A fetch and chew classic. Tennis balls are a perennial favorite for most dogs. While not expensive or an especially novel gift, they tend to wear out fast. So, keeping a few spares on hand is never a bad idea.

We recommend the Wilson US Open Extra Duty Tennis Ball. Unlike a lot of tennis ball clones intended strictly for dog use, Wilson’s Extra Duty Tennis Balls maintain their bounce and hold up well on harder play surfaces. A single can contains 3 tennis balls and will set you back only $3.99 with FREE Prime shipping and returns.

Lacrosse Balls

If you’re reading this from somewhere outside of Maryland, there’s a good chance you’ve probably never seen one of these before. Lacrosse balls are a little smaller than a baseball and are made from solid rubber. As you might imagine, this construction lends lacrosse balls a solid heft and a great bounce. Which makes them a great toy for larger, more active breeds and more aggressive chewers. You can pickup a 2 pack of lacrosse balls for $4.99.

Dog Lover Gift Ideas Under $10

Under a budget, but not especially crafty? No worries! Here are a few super affordable dog lover gifts. While not the most expensive items on the list, these gifts are things that they will likely use often. And when they do, they’ll have you to thank!

A Chocolate Labrador Retriever enjoying a few Jiminy's Cricket Protein Treats on a sunny day.

Jiminy’s Cricket Protein Dog Treats

We are absolutely in love with Jiminy’s — a cricket protein based dog treat. While feeding your dog crickets might sound gross, crickets are actually a super food. They’re high in protein, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, fiber, omegas, and a good source of taurine. They’re also sustainable. Compared to meat protein, crickets require 2,300x less water, 93% less land, and 83% less feed to produce. To put those numbers into perspective, if you compare Jiminy’s to traditional protein, each bag saves an average of 220 gallons of water. Jiminy’s 4 flavor sampler pack is a fun and affordable ($6.50 + free shipping) gift for any nutrition and environmentally conscious dog lover.

Dog Paw Shaped Christmas Stocking for Pets

For as much as we talk about pet stocking stuffers, it only makes sense to include a paw shaped stocking on the list. We found over a dozen of these paw shaped stockings listed on Amazon alone. But we liked this one simply because it was especially kitsch (there are tiny snowflakes built into the tartan fabric), priced just under $9 and qualifies for FREE Prime Shipping & Returns. But if you’re looking to splurge, for $20 + $7 shipping you can order a red paw shaped stocking that can be embroidered with your pet’s name in red thread.

Santa Paws Gourmet Dog Cookies by Claudia’s Canine Bakery

Festive and fresh baked, these delightful dog biscuit treats by Claudia’s Canine Bakery are made in the USA using only human grade ingredients. A 7 oz package will set you back $19.99 + FREE shipping.

Dog Paw Socks

If your family is big into giving ridiculous, “I can’t believe someone actually sells these” gifts, you’re going to love these animal paw socks. You can pick up a pair of these novelty paw socks for $9 on Amazon.

Dog Lover Gift Ideas Under $20

Twisted Dog Scarves from DogVenture Gear

Stylish, warm, and easy to wear — the collection of Twisted Dog Scarves from DogVenture Gear are the perfect gift for dog owners looking to keep their dogs comfortable and looking great on winter jaunts. Modeled after the infinity scarves worn by humans, DogVenture Twisted scarves are made from machine washable super soft flannel and come in 16 different patters and collars. If you needed another reason to splurge, a portion of all scarf, leash and collar sales from DogVenture Gear benefit the MD SPCA. These stylish dog scarves come in 6 different sizes ranging from 8″ to 25″ and cost only $18.

K9 Casuals Christmas Dog Hoodie with Lights & Bells

This festive dog costume is easily one of the most obnoxious yet brilliant things we’ve seen this season. Not only does this “ugly sweater” plaid coat have a hood, it also features flashing ultra-bright LED lights and jingle bells. The coat is made of an easy to fit stretchy material and the lights are contained within the fabric.

Several designs for this festive dog costume are available, including Plaid Ugly Sweater with Bells, Red & White Ugly Sweater, Reindeer, Santa Suit, Elf, and American Flag (which also features flashing Christmas lights for some inexplicable reason). Batteries are included. Price varies by design and size (7 sizes are available measuring from Teacup to XXL) ranging from $15.92 – $20.92 with FREE Prime shipping.

Pooping Pooches Wall Calendar (2020)

Looking for a great dog themed gag gift? Checkout this Pooping Pooches wall calendar. This year’s edition features a Jack Russell Terrier, Boxer, Maltese, Pit Bull Terrier, Labradoodle, Toy Fox Terrier, Portuguese Water Dog, and others doing their business in front of scenic vistas from across the country. Best of all, $1 from each calendar sold benefits the Maui Humane Society. Measures 8.5″ x 11″ closed (17″ x 11″ open) and costs only $16.99.

Pawscout Smarter Pet Tag 2.0

Pawscout offers a fresh take on pet tracking. Most smart pet tags rely on monitored GPS technology, which often requires a hefty upfront investment or monthly service fees to continue working. But as Pawscout works off of Bluetooth powered technology (it tracks pets within 300ft of users — which is further than you might think) there are no monthly fees. The Pawscout app will also send out alerts to nearby users, who will expand your search net by 300ft per user, and will allow you to create digital and shareable fliers without leaving the app. Best of all, Pawscout costs only $19.99 and qualifies for FREE Prime shipping.

a MudBuster Dog Paw Cleaner shown here in blue.

Mudbuster Paw Cleaner

Portable Paw Cleaners, like the Mudbuster, are one of the cheapest and easiest ways to keep your floors and carpets free of muddy paws — perfect for snowy and slushy Winter days. To use, simply add a little water, insert the muddy paw, twist gently, dry and repeat. These portable paw cleaners are small enough to pack along when taking trips to the park or on hikes, and are very easy to clean. Prices vary depending on the size selected ($12 – $15).

Paw Print Picture Frame

This DIY keepsake maker kit is an easy and affordable way to immortalize your dog lover’s favorite. The frame comes in three colors (black, grey, and white) and is available as a solid frame or hinged frame. The left side fits a photo of your favorite pup and the right holds a mold of the dog’s paw print. The mold is easy to setup and doesn’t require mixing or baking.

The kit includes everything you need to complete the project (including air dry claw, a handy mini rolling pin, shaping square, and double-sided tape) – all that’s missing is the dog and their photo. Best of all, since the frame fits a smaller 4×6 photo, you don’t need to use a huge photo. Though hiring a professional pet photographer to take their picture couldn’t hurt. Price varies by color ($17 – $20).

Pet Wand Dog Shower

While no substitute for a visit to a professional groomer, these dog shower attachments are a must have for dog owners who bath their own pets – especially those with dogs who have thicker fur coats. These shower wands can be used indoors or outside, operated with one hand and come with an extra long 8 foot long flexible hose. You can find these handy dandy pet bathing aids on Amazon for just under $20 with free Prime shipping.

Dog Tote Bag with Sequin Collar

This fun little tote bag (18″ long, 6″ wide, and 14″ tall) is a bit less ridiculous than our last two gifts, but still offers its fair share of whimsy. The dog’s collar is sequined and is available in gold, silver and pink. The back of the tote reads “My Best Friend” is a fun handwritten-style brush script. Prices vary depending on the color selected ($18 – $24).

Dog Towel with Hood & Waist Belt

Dog Towel with Hood & Waist Belt

Whalegate’s hooded dog towel solves one of the messiest problems with bath time – drying. The super absorbent 400G fabric dries dogs quickly and prevents them from having an opportunity to shake themselves dry. The hooded towel attaches to itself around the dog’s neck easily with the help of velcro. The towel can be even more securely fasted with the help of an included waist belt — allowing it to double as a warm dog coat or as a way to mitigate shedding when traveling. Prices vary by color ($19-$23).

Dog Lover Gift Ideas Under $50

Most of the experts we surveyed while assembling this list agreed that a “good” price point to aim for when considering what Holiday gift to buy was “around $50”. Whether they agree or not is another story entirely.

Hearth Hounds – Realistic Dog Shaped Stockings

Hearth Hounds offer a unique take on pet Christmas stockings, where their fully lined Holiday stockings actually resemble dogs from 23 different breeds — including Boston Terrier, Black Labrador Retriever, Golden Doodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Husky, Greyhound, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Dachshund, American Pitbull Terrier, Beagles, and English Bulldogs.

What impressed us the most about this product are the little extra 3D flourishes that they added to each breed. For instance the Boston Terrier stocking features a fun black and white harlequin pattern on the collar. Whereas the Golden Retriever stocking features shaggier fur along the ears and neck, but a more velveteen texture along the snout. Hearth Hound stockings are available on Amazon for $39.94 with FREE shipping.

Handmade Dog Coat from Baja Ponchos

Baja Ponchos specializes in high-end dog coats made from authentic serape blankets, handwoven in Tlaxcala, Mexico. I know what you’re thinking, “Why would I give a Mexican themed dog costume to someone on Christmas?”. But while these ponchos might be colorful, they’re more than just dog costumes.

Baja Ponchos are surprisingly warm, extremely durable, and offer superb stitching — making them great for everyday 3 season wear. They even include a reinforced slot in the shoulders for a leash or harness to pass through. Best of all, a portion of all Baja Poncho sales benefits the Baja California Spay Neuter Foundation — which sterilized over 2,000 animals in 2019 alone. Baja Ponchos come in 7 sizes ranging from XXS to XXL and in two colors, Pink and Blue. Prices vary by size, ranging from $18.39 – $37.99 with FREE Prime shipping.

photo of a fun bulldog wearing a frosty the snowman pet costume.

Snowman Dog Costume

Who wouldn’t want to see their dog in this festive snowman pet costume? The costume kit includes the headpiece (with mistletoe themed hat and holiday scarf) and the body with attached arms. Price varies with size (Extra Small, Small, Medium and Large) ranging from $21.13 – $24.98, with some sizes qualifying for FREE shipping.

A cozy cuddler dog bed. Great for dogs that love to dig and borrow, or pets that get scared by strange noises or storms.

Cozy Cuddler Dog Bed

Cozy Cuddler pet beds play right into a dog’s natural instincts to dig and burrow. The bottom section is your standard padded pet bed. But attached to the top is a matching blanket creating what we can only describe as a “puppy pita”. Dogs are free to sleep within the bed or on-top of the attached blanket. These pet beds are great for dogs that are cuddlers, generally anxious or fearful of outside noise or storms. The beds are both washer machine and dryer safe. Prices vary $34 – $50 depending on size and material.

BarkBrew Pawty Pack

BarkBrew is an alcohol free beer substitute formulated just for dogs. This canine “near beer” contains no alcohol, hops or carbonation. But does include Glucosamine, so technically you could argue BarkBrew is a joint supplement. The Pawty Pack includes 2x Beef Ales and 1x Chicken Ale, and comes in a handy-dandy cardboard carrying case. Pickup a BarkBrew Pawty Pack for $20.99 with FREE shipping.

Lucky Lab Wine Bottle Holder

Unlike the ridiculous monstrosity of a wine holder we posted during our Mother’s Day Gift Guide For Dog Moms, this Lucky Lab Wine Bottle Holder from TRUE actually looks like a dog. This playful dog themed wine bottle holder is constructed from poly resin, features a protective velvet backing and can hold one standard sized 750ml wine bottle.

This particular wineholder is modeled after a Black Labrador Retriever, but TRUE sells a variety of other designs modeled after other dog breeds including French Bulldogs, Yellow Labs, Rottweilers, Chihuahuas, Corgis, Yorkies, and Pugs. The Black Lab design sells for just under $25 with FREE shipping (note: price varies by breed).

Custom Cardboard Dog Cutout

This gift was suggested to us by the owners of the super dog friendly Blue Pit BBQ in Hampden (Thanks Cara!). These cardboard dog cutouts are an affordable option for anyone looking to give a ridiculous and memorable custom gift. Simply upload your pup’s photo and they’ll print the pup’s likeness out on cardboard or foam core, leaving you with a free standing cutout of the dog. Prices vary depending on the vendor, size, and material you choose ($29 – $72) and can be found on Etsy or purchased directly from companies like Almost Real Standups.

Dog Lover Gift Ideas Under $75

The Holiday gift ideas in the under $75 category are thoughtful and unique but not overly pricey. Many of which should probably be on your short list for consideration.

DIY Paper Craft Dog Kit – Mosley the Boxer

This paper sculpture is from Resident and is a great gift idea for those creative dog lovers in your life — especially those that are otherwise difficult to shop for. What makes this gift idea so unique is that it is simultaneously both an activity and an ornamental decoration. The craft kit is composed of 1/2 of glue, and 27 cut and scored pieces of brown, black and white paper — everything you need to assemble the paper sculpture.

This particular piece is rated at medium difficulty and should take 4-6 hours to complete. The assembly is in depth enough to lend a memorable experience, but not so difficult to be perceived as a burden or slog. Of course, easier and more difficult craft projects can be found at residentdesign.com. Mosley the Boxer DIY Paper Craft Kit costs $65.

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Cordless Hand Vacuum

Shed happens! Help your favorite dog lover stay ahead of the never ending onslaught of pet fur and dander with the help of the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser cordless hand vacuum.

BuddyRest Anti-Anxiety Weighted Dog Blanket

The BuddyRest anti-anxiety weighted dog blanket is based on the same anxiety and stress relief principles used by weighted blankets for humans. One side is made with a shed resistant suede and the other is made from a soft fleece. There are three sizes and weights available, ranging in cost from $69.99 – $99.99 + free shipping.

Dog Lover Gift Ideas Under $100

While not the most affordable gift options on the list, the Holiday gifts in the under $100 category are some of our absolute favorites for a multitude of reasons.

Cute black and white photo of a white pit bull terrier wearing a funny little top hat.
A puppy portrait from the Puptrait Studio with frameless dibond mount.

Professional Pet Portraits

Hiring a professional pet photographer or painter to create a custom pet portrait is a unique gift that any dog lover will cherish. Pet portrait prices vary ($500-$5,000) depending on the number and size of the prints commissioned, the material of the frame or mounting system used to hang the prints, and the skill / reputation of the artist.

While prints can be pretty pricey, many dog friendly photo studios don’t actually charge that much for the photoshoot itself. For example, the Puptrait Studio in Baltimore, Maryland charges only $99 for studio sessions (and yes – gift cards are available for purchase) – a small price to pay for a gift they will cherish for a lifetime.

NESCO Food Dehydrator

Food dehydrators are a must have item for any dog owner. You can use these devices to preserve a wide assortment of human foods such as herbs, edible flowers, fruit, mushrooms and beef jerky. But more importantly, dehydrators make it easy to make healthy and affordable high motivation dog treats at home.

We’re huge fans of NESCO dehydrators. They work great and are extremely reliable. In fact, we make all of the treats we use at the studio with the help of a NESCO dehydrator that we purchased over 15 years ago. And, priced at under $60 food dehydrators are great gift that will not break the bank.

iDig Digging Toy

Is your favorite dog lover’s pup a digger? If yes – then you should consider giving them this toy. It just might be the one thing that saves their flowers and yard. The idea of this puzzle style dog toy is pretty simple. Just hide treats in the pockets hidden within the flaps and let the dogs set to work tiring themselves out while trying to find the treats. The iDig comes in two models. One is for portable play, the other is designed to be used at home. Both models cost a little less than $80.

Elevated pet bed with attached canopy.

Elevated Pet Cot with Canopy

We are huge fans of these elevated pet beds. Similar to a dog house, these pet cots will protect a dog from the elements, get the dogs up off of the cold ground, and lend a nice shady spot to lay on sunnier days. But unlike a traditional dog house, these canopied dog cots are much easier to clean and are unlikely to become nests for rats, squirrels, raccoons, snakes, spiders or other animals that may be infectious, poisonous or flea-ridden. Price varies by size ($50 – $60).

Dog Lover Gift Ideas Under $500

If money is no object or you don’t mind stretching your budget a little for the woman who literally brought you into this world, you might want to give these great Holiday gifts a quick gander.

Please note: Paper Hat prints are not mounted. As seen here for demo purposes only.

Please note that the prints listed here are not mounted and will require a frame to hang. Half of all proceeds from Paper Hat print sales to benefit Bella’s Bully Buddies, a 501c3 all volunteer operated dog rescue.

There are currently 22 unique pet portraits in the Paper Hats collection. The image above is a particular fan favorite and features Bella, the namesake of Bella’s Bully Buddies. Prints may be purchased at K9RT.com for $149 a piece and include FREE standard domestic shipping.

Keetsa Pet Bed & Frame

Most people know Keetsa for their high quality BioFoam mattresses and memory foam mattress toppers for humans. But a few years back they expanses into making high end beds and bed frames for dogs. When they were first announced we had an opportunity to work with their new pet line and we were absolutely blown out of the water by the sturdiness, attention to detail, and sheer quality applied across the board.

The frame is made from gold-brushed coated stainless steel and 2.5″ wide laminated birch support slats. We were able to assemble the rugged metal frame in well under 5 minutes with no external tools required. The bedding is composed of three elements — an external hemp-blend fabric cover, an inside mesh fabric cover, and a memory foam pulp stuffing. Both covers are machine washable. To lend a sense of scale, the beagle mix featured in the image above weighed roughly 50lbs and could lay comfortably on the bed — with and without the frame. This stylish pet bed and frame can be purchased at Keetsa.com for only $249.

iFetch Interactive Ball Launcher

These interactive fetch devices are nothing short of amazing. They’re simple enough for most dogs to operate on their own (supervision is recommended). Just activate the device, set the launch distance (10′, 25′, 40′, or random distance), and when the dog drops a ball in the wide mouth opening in the top it will automatically launch across your yard. Prices vary depending on the retailer and device size, ranging from $119 – $199 + FREE Shipping.

Remote Dog Monitor& Treat Dispenser

Let’s face it, most dog lovers feel terrible whenever they have to leave their dog at home. This wifi connected dog monitor and treat dispenser means that your dog is never any further than your phone. Once networked, simply open the included Dogness app and you’ll be able to watch your dog in HD 720P video. The device also supports two-way audio and can dispense dry treats up to a half inch in diameter. The Vbroad Smart Pet Camera Treat Dispenser costs $150 on Amazon and qualifies for Prime shipping.

Treat & Train Remote Reward Dog Trainer

We can not speak highly enough about this product. We were first introduced to it while working with a dog photography client that was big into agility dog training. This device differs from the networked monitor linked above and is intended to be used while directly interacting with your dog, providing motivation at a distance.

This is a super handy tool for training dogs to run agility courses, but also makes training recall commands an absolute breeze. If they’re interested in taking more photos of their dog, this will make capturing action shots and photographing running dogs much easier. Simply set the device on the ground (up to 100 feet away), push the button on the included hand-held remote, and the Treat & Train will beep and release a treat. Treat & Trains are available on Amazon for $120 with Prime shipping.
