Professional pet photographer and Puptrait Studio founder, J.B. Shepard’s surreal dog portrait series “Paper Hats: Whimsical Portraits of the Once Discarded” is coming to Baltimore.
The opening reception for Paper Hats is scheduled for 7PM until 10PM Thursday, August 3rd at La Cakerie in Mount Vernon (1216 N Charles St, Baltimore, Maryland 21201). The show is hosted by Gallery 788 and scheduled to run until September 1st.
Paper Hats features adopted and fostered dogs wearing costumes made from newspaper, paper plates, and other recycled paper materials. Half of all art sale proceeds from the show will benefit Bella’s Bully Buddies, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit 100% volunteer operated dog rescue and foster organization. The 24″ x 24″ pieces are ready-to-hang and printed directly to brushed aluminum. The signed original prints are a first run / only run set, meaning they will not be reprinted in this format. However, metallic photo paper versions of each image are still available for purchase.
When asked about the series, Shepard explained, “My goal with Paper Hats is to show that all anyone needs to shine is a second chance. If we can sell some prints and bring in donations for Bella’s, obviously that would be fantastic. But Paper Hats is more than just a fundraiser. These aren’t just snapshots of puppies. There is a lot going on in these prints and they take a bit to process. I want people to spend some time with these images, really reflect on what they see and with any luck, walk out thinking about bully breeds and adoption a little differently. With that said, I can’t thank G788 and La Cakerie enough for lending us this soapbox to help spread our message. We really appreciate all they’ve done.”
